Hi-ho, hi-ho. It’s off a-gardening we go…

We finally made it to the allotment. Two weeks in a row!

I think I definitely deserve a high-five for that. The first time, a fortnight ago, was a no-matter-what-the-weather trip, and I was delighted that it was such a beautiful, sunny day and warm. A good day to be out toiling in nature. And last Sunday was just amazing!

Me, looking all glam...not!

I can tell you one thing for free, if you are a hay fever sufferer, which I am, then take a nose bag. And I don’t mean a horse nose bag, I mean a catch the drips type nose bag.

The first weekend wasn’t that bad, probably because the weeds hadn’t grown very big. But on Sunday…at one stage I had my foot on the nettles as I hacked at them with a spade, and all I could see were clouds of pollen floating gently towards me each time I hacked at the roots. I think I sneezed a billion times.

My sister and my nieces and nephew joined us last week, then it was just Krys, Roz and I on Sunday. I cannot recommend enough, the feeling one gets when you concentrate on one thing at a time.

“I’ll just dig this square and stop when it’s done/ I’ll clear these weeds and put them in a pile there/ I’ll clear this patch of stones for the next 30 minutes”. There’s a sense of serenity and oneness with the land that’s just so satisfying.

This Sunday I was far too busy and sneezy to take pictures, and my pleading with Roz that she take some didn’t work, so all the pictures you see were taken a fortnight ago by my 4-year-old daughter from another mother. Isn’t she just brilliant?

My mother would probably have to read that last sentence a few times and check to make sure I wrote it.

I HATED gardening in my teens. HATED it with only the passion that teenagers can exhibit.

I can honestly say that I now thoroughly enjoy it.

I am with you on this! I saw no point to gardening when I was younger and then today I cooked my very first head of broccoli plucked from my own raised bed. The joy in that achievement was something else. Your allotment looks amazing!

Congratulations! I can’t wait for that moment either. We’re only at clearing the land stage so still have a long way to go but it’s really a lot of fun. I’m glad I’m not the only one who hated gardening.

  2. I’ve recently got into gardening and like you, hated it as a teenager! My parents have a big garden and are always working on it and would try and get me interested but I was having none of it. Recently we’ve started doing up our own garden and it’s so much more enjoyable than I imagined. It’s nice to look out the back door and see our efforts bringing the place together 🙂

A garden right beside you? I’d give anything for that. There is just something fulfilling about it isn’t there? As a teen I just thought my parents had zero lies and were cheapskates growing their own food. No doubt our kids will think the same of us.

[…] Of course this is nearly impossible. But all of us know of at least one thing that’s gar-ran-teed to get you sneezing and teary eyed. For me, its long grass, its flowers in full bloom with pollen flying around (so no bloom festival for me ever!) and as I discovered very recently, nettle plants in bloom..in flower? I never know which is the correct one to say. anyway, that was the only time I nearly died this summer. It was clearing the allotment of the nettle plants which I wrote about here. […]
